Tips for Going to the Horse Auctions

by Jessica P

Are you thinking about buying a horse? Horse auctions are a great way to find the perfect one. But you want to make certain that you choose just the right horse. You also want to make sure the deal is legitimate and that you're getting what you truly need. Here are some good tips to get you started.

- Though they may be cheaper, you should not buy an untrained horse. Many people make this mistake. A lot of times, beginners will make this mistake and trained and experienced horse buyers and sellers will tell you not to do this. Horses can be quite dangerous if they haven't been properly trained.

- Don't neglect the older horses. Some people will shy away from the older horses at horse auctions but there is really no need to do this. An older horse makes a great first horse for a beginner rider.

- 'Try before you buy', if you can; don't be afraid to ask. In general, dealers like to be sure that their horses are getting good homes. If you try things out with the the horse before you decide, you'll likely get a horse that's right for you. You will be able to gauge the horse's temperament and demeanor as well.

- You want to be sure the registration papers match the horse. It's an important step, but many people neglect it. While you can expect that most dealers will be honorable and trustworthy, there are a few bad ones in the lot. So look over those papers.

It can be difficult to find the horse that is perfect for you at horse auctions. There are plenty of good horses to choose from. But following the tips above will help you find the horse you love! Good luck and enjoy yourself.
